Efua Ghartey broke through the glass ceiling to become the first female president of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) in a historic occasion.
Her election ushers in a new age of leadership for the association and opens doors for women in the legal field, making it a momentous occasion in its history.
Despite having more than 30 years of expertise, Mrs. Ghartey’s path to the presidency was not straightforward.
She had lost her two prior attempts to win the post by slim margins.
Nevertheless, her tenacity and persistence paid off, when on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, in the GBA presidential elections conducted in Kumasi, she received 1,278 votes, defeating her nearest opponent.
Her election has been heralded as a watershed event for the GBA, offering new ideas and motivating more women to assume leadership positions. With 1,624 votes, Victoria Barth was also chosen as vice president.
The fact that Mrs. Ghartey served as president is evidence of her diligence and commitment to the legal field.
She has over 30 years of GBA membership and has held a number of positions.
