The Police’s “seeming lack of action” in the prosecution of the director(s) of Akonta Mining Ltd for violating the nation’s mining rules has angered the Media Coalition Against Galamsey (MCAG), according to the MCAG.
According to a statement released by the media coalition on Thursday, its leadership attended a meeting with senior members of the Ghana Police Service’s Criminal Investigative Department (CID) to demand action on the situation.
The MCAG petitioned the Inspector General of Police to bring charges against the Director(s) of Akonta Mining Limited after the latter was alleged to have engaged in unlawful mining activities. The petitions were followed by the meeting.
According to the statement, senior CID officials informed the MCAG’s leadership that inquiries into the actions of Akonta Mining Limited were still ongoing. However, the statement continued, “We expressed our frustration at what appeared to be inaction in the prosecution of the director(s) of Akonta Mining Ltd, despite clear evidence that they had violated the Minerals & Mining Act, 2006 (Act 703) (including what we added to our petition and statement to the Police). We prayed that the necessary urgency be applied for the speedy prosecution of the director(s) of Akonta Mining Ltd.
The MCAG urged the public to support the fight against illicit mining, saying it remained steadfast in its conviction that there was no rationale for it to continue in Ghana.
“Losing this war is not an option at all. Responsible and sustainable mining should not be tolerated since it poses an existential threat.
