Under the leadership of Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Parliament’s Minority Caucus has contributed GH¢200,000 to aid merchants impacted by the tragic fire that occurred in Accra’s Kantamanto Market on January 2, 2025.
Mr. Afenyo-Markin showed sympathy for the vendors who lost their goods and property in the fire while he was at the market.
“We appeal to the government to come to your aid. Recently, we approved the budget, and we are aware that the contingency fund is available to assist in times of crisis,” Afenyo-Markin stated.
In order to provide some financial comfort, the Minority Leader also urged businesses that had lent money to the traders to think about lowering interest rates.

“This is GH¢200,000; it is a modest contribution from us, the mighty minority, to support you,” he said, characterizing the payment as a “modest contribution” from the Caucus.
The donation was intended to help the impacted traders while they rebuilt their companies.
The traders were greatly affected by the Kantamanto Market fire, and many have been finding it difficult to bounce back from the loss.
