The Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has elected Julius Maada Bio, the president of Sierra Leone, as its new chairman.

He succeeds Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who has been in office for a rotating one-year term.

The decision was made at the ECOWAS Authority’s 67th Ordinary Session, which took place in Abuja, Nigeria, on Sunday.

Former Brigadier General President Bio, who briefly served as Sierra Leone’s military ruler in 1996, made the transition to democratic governance and was elected president in 2018.

After a hotly contested election, he was elected to a second term in 2023.

The regional organization is facing numerous difficulties, including political instability in a number of its member states, and his selection as ECOWAS Chair comes at a crucial moment.

In the midst of ongoing post-election tensions in Sierra Leone, recent coup attempt accusations, and the ongoing self-imposed exile of his predecessor, former President Ernest Bai Koroma, who is still in Nigeria, Bio takes over the position.

With four of its fifteen member states being ruled by the military, ECOWAS is likewise going through a turbulent time in the region.

Unity and collaboration within the bloc have been further strained by the formation of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), which is made up of Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, and their formal exit from ECOWAS.

The need to promote communication, restore constitutional order in member states ruled by the military, and reassert ECOWAS’ significance in the face of changing regional alignments are anticipated to put President Bio’s leadership to the test.

John Dramani Mahama, the former president of Ghana, who was present at the conference, has since left the country.
