In anticipation of a fierce contest to choose the party’s nominee for the general elections in 2028, the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has formally started nominations for its eagerly awaited presidential primary.

A GH₵500,000 final filing fee and GH₵100,000 nomination forms may provide financial challenges for prospective flagbearers.

At a press conference in Accra today, July 29, NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong made the news, officially launching the internal competition.

The General Secretary set the stage for the pivotal exercise by announcing, “I’m happy to announce to you that we have officially opened nominations for our party members to become presidential candidates of our party for the 2028 elections.”

As per the criteria that were released, Saturday, January 31, 2026, is the date set for the NPP presidential primary.

The nomination period will end on Thursday, August 28, 2025, precisely one month after it begins today, July 29, 2025.

Any candidate would have to make a significant financial commitment given the GH₵600,000 total cost of nomination and filing.

The internal elections of Ghana’s major political parties frequently include this financial barrier, which frequently sparks discussions about inclusivity and the role of money in politics.

Critics claim that these fees exclude only the wealthiest or those with substantial financial support, thus repelling grassroots candidates, while parties maintain that they help cover the organizational costs of primaries.

The NPP intends to give its flagbearer enough time to prepare and bring the party together following a potentially brutal primary contest, as evidenced by its decision to open nominations almost two and a half years before the general elections in 2028. It also shows a calculated decision to prioritize external campaigning and internal unity early on.
