On Tuesday, Mr. Kyerematen told the media that Ali Zakaria’s assault, one of his polling agents, “doesn’t make sense.”
During the special delegates conference, Mr. Zakaria, who acted as the North East regional coordinator for the former Trade Minister’s campaign team during the first-round election to reduce the field of 10 candidates to five, was subjected to uncontrolled violence.
He was hospitalized following the horrific assault. After Ali Zakaria questioned some votes about showing their ballots to other delegates in public, the assault took place.
He described being outnumbered, caught off guard, and the focus of violent people. According to reports, Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia’s followers were behind the attack.
After a discussion with all the candidates and the party leadership, Mr. Kyerematen spoke to the media to condemn the incident, saying: “What happened to my colleague on Saturday was an act of total indiscipline and indecent behavior.”
“How do we oversee such behavior as a decent party entering an election, especially at the level of super delegates?” Mr. Kyerematen was curious.
“We all joined the NPP because we are committed to the party’s values, but what is happening clearly demonstrates that this is not what we anticipated when we joined the party,” he stated.
I won’t put up with this kind of behavior, he threatened. It is not coherent.
Mr. Kyerematen questioned what the occurrence on Saturday portends for the November primary elections, which have a sizable electoral college.
“How do we intend to be able to conduct ourselves as a family, trying to select a leader in a peaceful and organized manner, when we cannot do that with 200 000 or more people gathered?”
Therefore, he said, “I’m honestly very disturbed about what happened,” and he said, “The party must not shine a light on this kind of incident and we’ll have to try to understand why this happened in an internal elections.”
“Right now, my concern is with my colleague here’s health. Pay attention to that. When Mr. Kyerematen was questioned about his chances of winning the November conference, he responded, “That is why we’re here.”
