Practicals sessions preceded the main written papers nationwide for the 2025 West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), which was open to school candidates, yesterday.

A total of 461,640 registered candidates, 207,381 men and 254,259 women, are taking the exam this year, representing a 0.2% rise over the overall number from the previous year.

The written portion of the tests, which will cover 65 subjects and require an average of eight papers per candidate, is set to take place from August 20 to September 19, 2025.

Professor Ernest Kofi Davis, the Acting Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), told reporters early Monday that 701 locations around the country would host the exams.

He emphasized that in order to guarantee the integrity and security of the examination process, the GES is working in conjunction with the West African Examinations Council and national security organizations.

“We are taking adequate security measures; there will be security escorts and posts in schools, particularly in conflict-prone areas such as Nkwanta and Bawku, where visible security presence has been arranged,” Prof. Davis said.

Prof. Davis advised applicants to avoid any kind of malpractice and to prepare well.

“Candidates should focus on independent work and avoid relying on so-called ‘APO’ or leaked materials, which will not be available; any student caught cheating will face severe consequences,” he warned.

He also strongly cautioned supervisors and invigilators to maintain professional standards to prevent disciplinary committee action.

The GES Council has approved such disciplinary measures to protect the integrity of the exams and the larger educational system, he added, adding that “any invigilator or supervisor found engaging in malpractice will be dismissed.”

Additionally, Prof. Davis urged candidates to give it their all and perform really well.

In order to guarantee a seamless and incident-free exam period, the GES thanked educators, parents, and other stakeholders for their ongoing support and urged national collaboration.
