Today, Friday, June 9, 2023, will mark the long-awaited Green Ghana Day across the nation.

Ten million seedlings will be planted as a result of the exercise. President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo established the Green Ghana Day in 2021 under the direction of the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources as a part of a government initiative to aggressively promote afforestation and reforestation.

The effort aims to rebuild the nation’s lost forest cover, which was decimated by unauthorized small-scale mining and timber cutting. Five million trees were supposed to be planted in the first round, but more than seven million seedlings were actually planted.

The 20 million aim was surpassed in 2022 with the planting of more than 26 million trees. On May 17, at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, officially began this year’s Green Ghana Day and urged all well-meaning Ghanaians to assist the tree-planting initiative.

The renowned King stated that the Day offered Ghanaians a chance to demonstrate their nationalism and dedication to conserving the country’s forest cover and leave a much richer and greener Ghana for the next generation.

“Government can’t handle it by itself. To help the government deal with these issues, we must all get involved, according to Otumfuo Osei Tutu.

In order to save the lakeside enclave of Lake Bosomtwe in the Bosomtwe District of the Region, the Asantehene promised to lead his chiefs and subjects in planting 2.5 million trees.

The Green Ghana Project is an essential intervention to raise national awareness of the need for collaborative action towards the restoration of the damaged landscapes as the government has been taking numerous steps to replace the nation’s lost forest cover since 2017.

The initiative also intends to instill in citizens—especially the younger generation—the ideals of planting and caring for trees in order to lessen the consequences of climate change and enhance the environment.

In general, more than 81 percent of the seedlings planted in 2021 and 72% of those planted in 2022 survived.
