Ghana’s Vice-President, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, has urged the public to allow the law to take its course in the alleged sexual abuse case involving the suspended headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS), Zakaria Abdulai.

The Vice-President described the allegations as a serious national concern, stressing that sexual abuse cases involving students can have lasting consequences for victims, their families and society.

Speaking after returning from the Global South Academic Forum in Shanghai, China, she said she had been following developments surrounding the case and had taken note of public reactions and actions by the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Professor Opoku-Agyemang emphasised the importance of allowing the appropriate legal institutions to investigate the allegations and determine the next steps.

NDC Directs Zakaria Abdulai to Step Aside

The NDC has directed Zakaria Abdulai to step aside from the Juaben Constituency chairmanship race while investigations into the allegations continue. The party’s decision follows an investigation by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service.

Abdulai, who was suspended by the Ghana Education Service (GES), is facing allegations of sexual abuse involving female students at Obuasi SHTS. The allegations gained widespread public attention following an investigation by JoyNews journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni.

According to police information, a 20-year-old Form Two student, accompanied by her father, lodged a complaint with the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) in Obuasi on August 4, 2026. Other reports have alleged that 19 additional girls were affected.

The allegations have sparked widespread public concern, with calls for a transparent and thorough investigation to ensure accountability and protect students in Ghanaian schools.

The case has also renewed discussions about sexual abuse in schools, student protection, teacher misconduct, child safeguarding and accountability within Ghana’s education system.

The allegations against Abdulai remain subject to investigation, and the appropriate legal processes are expected to establish the facts of the case.
