Government representatives have confirmed that Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, the vice president of Ghana, is in good health and is currently on a little vacation overseas per medical advise.
The Vice President’s condition was explained by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, in an interview on Channel One TV on Tuesday, April 8, 2025.
He gave Ghanaians the reassurance that the nation’s first female vice president is recuperating well and will soon return to her official duties.
“She is currently in good health and taking a short rest as advised by her doctors, and, in short order, she should be back to her duties,” Mr. Kwakye Ofosu said. “She is in the United Kingdom as I speak,” he added.
His remarks support prior remarks made by Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Minister of Foreign Affairs, who also aimed to stop circulating rumors over the Vice President’s health.
On Sunday, April 6, Mr. Ablakwa addressed the Ghanaian community in Lagos, Nigeria, denouncing what he called nefarious propaganda and false information.
“Some fears about the state of our mother, the first female vice president of the Republic of Ghana. I also want to assure you that she is doing very, very well. Your prayers worked, your prayers from all of us, Ghanaians at home and abroad, have really worked,” Mr. Ablakwa said.
“I have heard from her, so I know what I am talking about, and she’s doing well,” he added confidently.
It has been reported that Vice President Opoku-Agyemang became ill soon after completing official duties on Friday, March 28. Before being transported overseas for additional care, she received her initial treatment at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC).
Social media was flooded with unsubstantiated health-related allegations in the days that followed, which government authorities now allege are both politically driven and untrue.
“Please ignore all of that very vicious and un-Ghanaian evil propaganda that some people are speculating. Our mother is doing very, very well, and very soon she is going to return to her duties, serving Ghana, making all of you proud and particularly inspiring our young girls, our daughters, to know that there is nothing our women cannot achieve—that women are as good as men and that what men can do, women can also do and do it better,” Mr. Ablakwa reiterated.
It is expected that Prof. Opoku-Agyemang will return in the next few days as government representatives continue to call for unity and calm, asking people to concentrate on the facts rather than conjecture.
