Constituents of the Ayawaso East constituency will vote for a new Member of Parliament today, Tuesday, March 3, 2026.

Over 40,000 registered voters are likely to participate in the election to replace the vacancy created by the late MP, Mahama Naser Toure, who died in January 2026.

Following the end of internal party primaries, two main candidates emerged as the frontrunners in this election.

  • Baba Ali: The New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate.
  • Baba Jamal: The National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate

The Electoral Commission (EC) has certified that all logistical and security plans have been completed to ensure a credible and orderly process. On Monday, March 2, Fred Tetteh, the EC’s Director of Research, told the public that the commission is ready for a “well-organised” exercise.

“This by-election, which is a parliamentary type of election, is first-past-the-post. So, one vote can make a difference, when it is proven that a fraudulent activity took place, the commission will make a decision.” Tetteh explained.

Additionally, the EC has issued a strong warning against electoral malfeasance, with a focus on vote-buying. Officials stressed that there would be harsh penalties for any wrongdoing that was proven.

Regardless of the margin, the candidate with the most legitimate votes will be proclaimed the winner under Ghana’s first-past-the-post system.

The Ghana Police have placed officers throughout the area to keep everyone calm and protect the integrity of the vote.

Their presence is meant to avoid disturbances and guarantee that voters can cast their ballots in a tranquil setting all day long.
