The West African Gas Pipeline Company Limited (WAPCo) has refuted accusations that it was experiencing technical difficulties that caused power outages in sections of the country on Friday, July 7.

In a statement issued on July 7, the Ghana Grid Company Ltd (GRIDCO) blamed the power outages on a lack of gas supplies from the Atuabo Gas Processing Plant (GPP) and the West African Gas Pipeline (WAPCo). According to GRIDCo, the deficit has produced a 650MW supply gap.

In response, WAPCo stated that it cannot be held responsible for the outages and that its facilities were and continue to be fully operational for gas delivery.

WAPCo blamed Friday’s challenge to a lack of gas from the National Gas Company’s plant at Atuabo, which went down, rendering WAPCo unable to transport. “WAPCo wishes to clarify that we had no technical issues and that our facilities were and continue to be fully operational to deliver gas.”

“WAPCo transports gas in accordance with its agreements with gas shippers.” These Shippers buy gas from gas suppliers, transport it via WAPCo pipelines, and sell it to gas offtakers (mostly power firms).

When the agreed-upon volume of gas becomes available, WAPCo transfers it to the shipper’s consumers.

“The issue yesterday was that the Ghana National Gas Company’s plant at Atuabo went down, so there was no gas available for WAPCo to transport,” WAPCo explained in a statement.
