The Ghana Police Service’s Criminal Investigations Department (CID) has received an invitation from Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
At approximately 9:30 a.m. on Monday, October 6, 2025, he reported to the CID headquarters in Accra as instructed by Attorney-General and Justice Minister Dr. Dominic Ayine.
Mr. Boasiako had been threatened with arrest by the Attorney General if he did not disclose himself.
The A-G said on Friday that charges against Bernard Antwi Boasiako and his Akonta Mining company were finalised and signed.
“The charges against Wontumi, Akonta Mining have been signed,” Dr. Ayine said during President John Dramani Mahama’s meeting with civil society organisations on illegal mining in Accra.
“On Monday, he ought to arrive. I’ll order his arrest and read his charges to him if he doesn’t show up by Monday.”
The development came as enquiries into Akonta Mining’s practices continued.
Earlier, DCOP Lydia Yaako Donkor, the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), acknowledged that investigations were in progress and mentioned that another individual associated with the organisation had been taken into custody.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Lydia Yaako Donkor, the Director-General in charge of CID, stated that although Mr Boasiako had previously interacted with investigators, his poor health had caused him to postpone recent appearances.
She clarified that although Chairman Wontumi had previously interacted with investigators on multiple occasions, his counsel had recently backed off further appearances owing to illness.
DCOP Donkor reassured the public that the final result would be shared and emphasised that “the investigations are actively ongoing”.
