President John Dramani Mahama met with mining associations, civil society organisations, and religious leaders at Jubilee House on Friday, October 3, 2025, to talk about workable plans to stop illegal mining in Ghana.
Hon. Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah (MP), Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, presented the government’s comprehensive plan to address the threat during the meeting.
He highlighted five key interventions: rehabilitating degraded lands through the Tree for Life initiative, cleaning polluted water bodies with the Blue Water Guards, formalising small-scale mining through rCOMSDEP, strengthening law enforcement through NAIMOS, and reforming the licensing regime.

President Mahama has spearheaded these reforms, which Hon. Buah pointed out are already bearing fruit, with recovered forests and better water quality in a number of areas.
He reiterated that the government will continue to battle until Ghana’s forests and waterways are completely restored.
Although civil society organisations applauded the government’s renewed efforts, they called for more transparency and stricter enforcement.
In order to achieve a sustainable and responsible mining sector, the Minister emphasised that their partnership and vigilance are still essential.
