The owner of Akonta Mining Company Limited and the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, has been charged in the High Court in Accra with allowing two individuals to conduct mining operations on his company’s mining concession without the sector minister’s consent.
Two counts of assigning mineral rights without permission and two counts of intentionally aiding an unauthorised mining activity at Samreboi in the Western Region have been brought against Chairman Wontumi and his firm.
Kwame Antwi, a director of Akonta Mining Company Limited, is presently at large after being charged with two charges of assigning mineral rights without authorisation and intentionally aiding an unauthorised mining enterprise.
Chairman Womtumi entered a not guilty plea to the accusations in the High Court’s Criminal Division, which is chaired by Justice Audrey Kocuvie-Tay.
