Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer candidate, has reiterated that his motivation for entering politics is a dedication to public service rather than self-interest.
In preparation for January 31, 2026, Dr. Bawumia is beginning a four-day campaign tour of the Western Region by travelling to the constituencies of Amenfi East, Amenfi West, and Amenfi Central.
Speaking to party members in Amenfi West, he emphasised his record, emphasising that his work in public office demonstrates honesty, effectiveness, and responsible use of the country’s resources.
As an example, Dr. Bawumia mentioned the Mobile Money Interoperability project, pointing out that the previous NDC administration had proposed a $1.2 billion contract, which he had cancelled and finished for only $4.5 million, “not even up to $5 million.”
He claims that thousands of employment have been created nationwide and that the program has greatly increased financial access.
He stated that seeing the beneficial effects of such initiatives on the lives of regular Ghanaians brings him the most fulfilment.
Delegates in Amenfi West and around the country were urged by the former vice president to support his campaign to guide the NPP into the 2028 elections.
The party, meantime, has vehemently denounced a purportedly “despicable and divisive” remark made by Kwaku Asante Boateng, the Asante Akim South MP, against Dr. Bawumia.
In an unprovoked attack, the MP allegedly claimed that Dr. Bawumia was unsuitable to lead the party in an interview with Adom TV. The comments have caused public uproar, with civil society organisations, party members, and residents denouncing them as discriminatory and tribal.
The NPP National Secretariat issued a statement on Saturday in which it reaffirmed the party’s commitment to equality, unity, and national peace while distancing itself from the MP’s comments.
According to the statement, “The NPP reiterates its longstanding commitment to inclusivity, equality, and national cohesion,” noting that the party’s core values are equality, democracy, justice, and freedom.
