About GH675,313.00 has been recovered by the Electricity Company of Ghana Ltd. (ECG), Accra West Region, from 94 customers who were discovered to have used various illegal connections.

The consumers also participated in illicit service connections, direct connections, meter bypasses, and meter tampering. During ECG’s one-week nationwide revenue mobilization campaign from May 26 to June 2, the customers were discovered.

The corporation claims that the operation is intended to recover all debts owed to it and to keep tabs on the condition of its customer facilities’ installed meters.

535,822 KWh of electricity, or roughly GH675,313.00, were obtained by the Accra west region.

Ing Emmanuel Akinie, the general manager of ECG Accra West, commended the field team’s diligence in spotting the violations.

He pointed out that the sophisticated nature of the observed illicit activities demonstrates the resolve of some consumers to prevent the company from receiving payment for the electricity they use. Ing. Akinie continued, “We have disconnected power from these customers, surcharged them for the electricity they used, and assessed a penalty fee for their illegal behavior. They will also face legal action.”

ECG has disclosed that it is making significant investments in technology to help it identify clients who engage in criminal activity.

In order to get real-time updates on what is happening on a customer’s premises, we have piloted a few smart meter solutions. When the meter casing is opened, bypassed, or otherwise tampered with, it alerts our office, he said.

Ing. Akinie hinted at intentions to introduce more of these smart meters to help fight crime.

There are eight active districts in the Accra West region. Ablekuma, Achimota, Amasaman, Bortianor, Dansoman, Kaneshie, Korlebu, and Nsawam are some of these names.
