An article circulating on social media that claimed there was an HIV outbreak at the university prompted a response from the management of the Ho Technical University.

The article claimed that the university’s HIV epidemic was caused by hookup, an informal type of sex work. The university claims that the aforementioned publication is not supported by any such data.

In a statement released on Monday, June 5, 2023 and signed by its Registrar, C.K. Amehoe, the institution clarified that “the University Health Service as well as the Municipal and Regional Health Directorates of the Ghana Health Service have no such information on HTU as published.”

Therefore, it advised the general public to “disregard the publication as it is entirely baseless and false.”

The general public was also cautioned to “avoid sharing the false publication as it may harm the institution’s hard-won reputation and image.”

The university stated that “management of the institution shall institute legal action against any person (s) sharing the said false publication.”

The statement reassured “all its stakeholders and the general public that the Ho Technical University remains safe and one of the preferred technical universities worldwide.”
