Dr. Peter Appiahene, a member of the Electoral Commission (EC), has been taken before the Supreme Court for his suspected ties to the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).
According to the South Dayi Member of Parliament Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, who brought the lawsuit, a person is ineligible to serve on the EC if they are a “known sympathiser, a member or openly affiliates or identified with a registered political party in Ghana.”
Dr. Appiahene was one of three new members of the electoral management committee sworn in by President Akufo-Addo in March of this year.
Dr. Appiahene was urged to step down during a news conference by three civil society organizations, including the Coalition of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO), the Star-Ghana Foundation, and the Civic Forum Initiative (CFI).
This appointment, according to the CSOs, is unconstitutional.
The South Dayi MP is requesting that the appointment be revoked by the Apex Court.
“An order rescinding the First Defendant’s appointment to the Second Defendant Commission by the President of the Republic of Ghana.
“An order of interim injunction prohibiting the defendant from representing himself as a member of the second defendant commission while the lawsuit is still underway.
“An order of permanent injunction prohibiting the first defendant from representing himself as a member of the second defendant Commission or acting in that capacity.
