All government employees are required by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to resign from their posts before to running for any executive post within the party.
Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the party’s general secretary, made the announcement last Thursday at a news conference in Accra. He stated that the directive is a component of plans for restructuring that would begin on January 30.
According to Mr. Kwetey, any government appointee who wants to run for a party position must retire at least six months before submitting candidacy forms.
He said, “Any person contesting any position in the party who is holding an office to which he or she was appointed by the President, or the government, shall resign at least six (6) clear months from the said office or appointment prior to the filing of the nomination forms for the party position he or she desires to contest.”
Ministers, Deputy Ministers, Chief Executive Officers and their deputies, and Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) are all covered by the directive, according to the General Secretary.
“Persons who are affected by the restrictions specified in paragraph (1) of this section shall include the following: (a) Ministers and Deputy Ministers; (b) Chief Executive Officers or Managing Directors and Deputy Chief Executive Officers or Deputy Managing Directors, or analogous officers; (c) Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Administrative Units of the Government of Ghana,” he disclosed.
However, Mr. Kwetey noted that the guideline, which aims to ensure impartiality in the party’s internal election processes, does not apply to board chairpersons.
“A person appointed as a chairperson or member of any Board or any analogous position shall be exempt from the restrictions imposed by paragraph (1) of this section. NDC has so many people, our numbers are massive, millions of supporters.
“We have so many people capable of holding positions. It cannot be a situation where only one or two individuals are capable of holding an appointed position in government and also a party position,” he added.
Nominations for party positions will be submitted from Saturday, November 7, to Monday, November 9, 2026; candidates will be vetted on Thursday, November 12, and Friday, November 13, 2026; the National Delegates Congress will elect new national executives on December 19, 2026.
