MPs can’t act pious when it comes to vote-buying – Fifi Kwetey

Members of Parliament should be the last to lecture others about vote-buying, according to Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The majority caucus called for the annulment of the Ayawaso East NDC primary because to accusations of voter inducement during the contentious internal elections.

Speaking to Citi News outside of a meeting with the party’s Volta caucus in advance of the by-election on March 3, Mr. Kwetey contended that Members of Parliament who have personally survived hotly contested primaries are not qualified to offer moral advice on the matter.

“Our friends in Parliament cannot pretend to be holy. Every single one of them have been involved in their primaries. So the last group to pontificate about vote-buying should not be them at all. So let’s ensure that if there is a comprehensive solution, we find it together.”

He emphasised that the Majority Caucus continues to support the party’s official stance to hold the by-election and keep Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed as the NDC’s nominee.

“I believe that they are on board, because the party has taken a position,” he stated.

The passing of Nasser Toure Mahama, the current MP, in January set off the Ayawaso East by-election.

In what is expected to be a keenly watched fight, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate, Baba Ali Yussif, will pose a serious threat to the NDC’s candidate, Baba Jamal, who is running to keep the seat for the party.
