Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang will receive the University of Cape Coast’s (UCC) distinguished Distinguished Fellow Award in honour of her exceptional contributions to leadership, education, and national development.
The award is “in recognition of Her Excellency’s distinguished services to the University of Cape Coast as an illustrious alumna and Fellow, as well as her commitment to Society, Women and Children, Academia, Governance, Democracy, Leadership, National and Global Development,” the university said in a press release released on Friday, February 27, 2026.
As “the first female Vice President of the Republic of Ghana,” UCC further recognised her historic role in Ghanaian politics, calling this achievement “a transformational moment in the country’s democratic and gender representation history.”
Her achievements to education during her time as Minister for Education from 2013 to 2017 were also honoured by the university.
She concentrated on “strengthening basic and secondary education systems; teacher development initiative; expanding access to quality education; and advocating equity for girls and marginalised communities,” according to the school.
Beyond Ghana, the UCC highlighted her influence on women’s education throughout Africa, pointing to her tenure as Chancellor of the Women’s University in Africa in Zimbabwe from 2018 to 2024, during which time she “demonstrated sustained commitment to advancing women’s access to higher education across the African continent.”
During her tenure as Vice-Chancellor from 2008 to 2012, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang, a UCC alumni, made history by being “the first female Vice-Chancellor of a public university in Ghana.”
The award ceremony will start at 2:00 pm on Friday, March 13, 2026, at the New Examination Centre on the UCC campus.
The release said, “The University of Cape Coast congratulates Her Excellency Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang on this distinguished award.”
