The Akropong Circuit Court denied bail to Freddie Blay, the former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), after he was arrested over a purported demolition issue in Kitase.

On Monday, March 16, 2026, authorities in Accra executed an arrest warrant for Mr. Blay and turned him over to the Akropong Police.

The complaint is based on a purported demolition order that the previous NPP chairman issued for a house that was being built on a plot of land in Kitase.

Mr. Blay was invited to help with investigations after the landowner apparently filed a complaint with the police. It is said that he did not accept the invitation.

He was later charged, but on the April 2025 arraignment date, he failed to appear in court for no apparent reason.

As a result, the court issued an arrest warrant, which was carried out on Monday.

But according to others close to Mr. Blay, he was not aware of the arrest warrant when he was taken into custody.

The former NPP chairman bought a piece of land in 1994, but it was later the focus of legal action, according to the sources.

According to people close to Freddie Blay, he did not order any buildings to be demolished; instead, he directed that a bare plot of ground be cleared in January 2026 in order to stop harmful creatures, especially reptiles, from breeding.

The sources further stated that the complainant had already won a favourable decision at the Koforidua High Court, but that decision has since been challenged.

They additionally asserted that efforts to provide the complaint with appeal-related procedures had failed.

The sources claim that Mr. Blay was not aware of the arrest warrant until it was carried out on Monday, nor was he aware of any other court case against him aside from the continuing appeal processes.
