The government summoned the Acting High Commissioner of the South African High Commission in Ghana, Mr Thando Dthamba, in response to recent reports of xenophobic attacks involving foreign citizens in South Africa.

The Minister mentioned a specific incidence in KwaZulu-Natal Province in a press release on April 23.

According to the report, a Ghanaian resident was approached, asked to show confirmation of his legal status, and ordered to leave South Africa and “fix his country.”

Such behaviour, according to him, compromises the rights and dignity of law-abiding people.

The statement added that while no fatalities or injuries have been reported in the current episodes, comparable incidents in the past have resulted in property damage and fatalities, highlighting the necessity of prompt involvement to prevent escalation.

Mr. Ablakwa also emphasised the long-standing ties between Ghana and South Africa, citing Ghana’s assistance during the latter’s anti-apartheid campaign as an example of the two countries’ unwavering solidarity.

“Unprovoked harassment of foreign nationals is contrary to the principles of African unity and peaceful coexistence,” he stressed.

The government has since filed a formal protest, requesting for immediate action to preserve the safety of Ghanaian people, avoid additional instances, and ensure that such scenarios do not occur again.

In response, Mr Dthamba stated that the South African government is taking the situation seriously and has taken steps to restore order.

He also stated that law enforcement officials are constantly watching the situation to prevent violence and ensure accountability.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs underlined its commitment to protecting Ghanaians overseas, stressing that diplomatic relations with South African authorities would continue.
