Maxwell Kofi Jumah’s arrest and ongoing detention have drawn harsh criticism from the Minority in Parliament, who characterise the action as politically motivated and an effort to stifle opposition views.

The caucus stated that the circumstances surrounding Mr Jumah’s detention by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) raise grave concerns and accused the administration of using state institutions to persecute political opponents in a statement released on April 29.

The Minority further claimed that the development is a component of a larger plan to scare New Patriotic Party (NPP) members and impair their capacity to critically examine government policies.

It also made reference to a previous incident that occurred on April 14, 2026, when EOCO investigators allegedly searched Mr. Jumah’s Atonsu, Kumasi, home while he was away and confiscated personal items, including a laptop and keys.

Citing Article 18(2) of the 1992 Constitution, the caucus described the activities as illegal and claimed they breached Mr. Jumah’s constitutional right to privacy.

The statement added, “The pattern of conduct is unmistakable and deliberate: a raid to intimidate; a seizure of personal property to destabilise; and a formal arrest to send a chilling message across the entire NPP, the goal of this Government is to weaken the NPP as a political force capable of holding the Mahama administration accountable. That agenda will fail.”
