The Ghana passport is among the strongest in Africa, ranking 11th on the continent and 68th overall in the 2026 Henley Passport Index, having access to about 60 visa-free locations.

The Ghana passport can presently enter roughly 67 countries without a visa, according to the most recent rankings.

Ghana’s passport was ranked 53rd in the world in 2006, but it dropped to a record low of 84th in 2021. The current rating of 68th is a notable 16-place improvement over the bottom from 2021.

“Under the dynamic and stellar leadership of our Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, we’re bouncing back stronger and better. We shall restore Ghana’s passport to the top in the foreseeable future.” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in response to the most recent ranking.

Ghanaian passport holders can travel freely within the sub-region and to other visa-free and visa-on-arrival locations across the world as members of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

Ghanaians are urged to use the official website at https://passport.mfa.gov.gh to apply for or renew their passports.
