President John Dramani Mahama is scheduled to deliver a keynote address at the 79th World Health Assembly (WHA), the World Health Organization’s (WHO) highest decision-making body, in Geneva today [Monday, May 18], as part of efforts to reframe global health governance and strengthen health sovereignty for developing countries, particularly those in the Global South.

In order to establish strategic health priorities, approve the WHO’s operating budget, and organise coordinated responses to public health emergencies and emerging health risks, the WHA brings together global health specialists, development partners, heads of state, and health ministers from all over the world.

The “Accra Reset Initiative,” a flagship policy initiative he has been promoting to redefine global health alliances and advance what he refers to as “health sovereignty” for developing nations, is anticipated to receive significant attention in President Mahama’s speech.

The program aims to promote a change in national health systems toward ones that are more resilient and self-sufficient, rather than heavily dependent on outside donor help.

The President is expected to use the platform to challenge global leaders and multilateral institutions to reconsider structural inequalities in global health financing, particularly as several low- and middle-income countries face significant cuts in international donor funding.

He is anticipated to argue that the changing global financial landscape necessitates increased investment in domestic health infrastructure, stronger pharmaceutical production capacities, and improved access to inexpensive and equitable healthcare services.

His speech is anticipated to heavily emphasise the idea of “health sovereignty,” which is the foundation of the Accra Reset Initiative. He will advocate for a more equitable global health architecture that gives nations in the Global South more authority over their emergency response plans, funding sources, and health priorities.

In addition to the plenary session, President Mahama is expected to hold a number of high-level bilateral talks outside of the assembly with heads of international health organisations, development partners, and world leaders.

Additionally, he will organise a unique Accra Reset side event called “Geneva Clarion Call,” which is anticipated to bring together global health stakeholders and policymakers to further address health fairness, finance reform, and the building of sustainable health systems.
