The Ghanaian government has taken a big step towards reforming the small-scale mining sector by launching the Cooperative Mining Scheme at Akyem Kotoku in the Eastern Region, with the goal of encouraging responsible, sustainable, and community-driven mining activities.

Hon. Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, spoke at the launch and asked miners and community members to adopt safe mining methods to ensure the initiative’s long-term success.

Strengthened stakeholder participation, improved law enforcement, regulatory reforms, reclamation of degraded lands and water bodies, and the development of alternative livelihood options are some of the pillars.
