327 Ghanaian nationals who were trapped in Port Bouët, a municipality in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, due to an ongoing demolition exercise that uprooted residents and damaged sources of income have been repatriated by the Ghanaian government.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a statement on June 12, 2026, stating that the repatriation exercise is being carried out to help Ghanaians who were left stranded after the demolitions destroyed their houses, companies, and means of subsistence.

On Thursday, June 11, 2026, the Ministry revealed that 228 of the impacted citizens have already been successfully returned to Ghana.

It further stated that plans had been made for the remaining Ghanaians to return home on Friday, June 12, making a total of 327 repatriated individuals.

The Ghanaian government offered free buses and trucks to carry the returnees and their possessions back to the nation in order to make the process easier.

The Ministry also disclosed that Ivorian authorities have shown a desire to provide compensation to people impacted by the demolition operation.

It stated that Ghana is actively working with Côte d’Ivoire’s authorities to guarantee that impacted Ghanaians receive the promised compensation.

Ghana’s diplomatic office in Abidjan would continue to coordinate with pertinent parties and keep an eye on developments pertaining to the compensation arrangements as part of the process.

The Ministry promised ongoing assistance to guarantee the effective return and reintegration of the impacted individuals and reiterated the government’s commitment to the welfare and protection of Ghanaians living overseas.

Additionally, it thanked the Côte d’Ivoire government and all other relevant parties for their assistance in making the repatriation process possible.
