Ghana Armed Forces and NADMO Provide Flood Relief Support to Personnel Affected by June 29 Disaster
The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), in partnership with the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), has provided relief items and financial assistance to 297 military personnel and civilian employees impacted by the devastating June 29 floods.
The emergency support aims to help officers and civilian staff whose homes and personal belongings were damaged by severe flooding caused by heavy rainfall in Accra and several other parts of Ghana.
The relief package was officially presented by Chief of the Defence Staff, Lieutenant General William Agyapong, during a ceremony held at Nicholson Stadium at Burma Camp in Accra on Friday.
Most of the beneficiaries, who live outside military barracks, received essential household items, replacement military uniforms, and financial assistance jointly funded by the Ghana Armed Forces and NADMO to support their recovery.
Speaking at the event, Lt. Gen. Agyapong said the initiative reflects the Armed Forces’ unwavering commitment to the welfare of its personnel and civilian workforce while demonstrating solidarity with those affected by the natural disaster.
He also conveyed the condolences and support of President John Dramani Mahama, Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, Defence Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, the Military High Command, and the entire GAF leadership to all victims affected by the floods, reaffirming the government’s commitment to disaster relief and humanitarian assistance.

Addressing beneficiaries during the relief presentation, Chief of the Defence Staff Lieutenant General William Agyapong expressed the Ghana Armed Forces’ heartfelt sympathy to military personnel and civilian employees who suffered losses during the devastating June 29 floods.
He acknowledged the emotional and financial hardship caused by the torrential rains, noting that many victims lost valuable property. However, he encouraged those affected to remain grateful for their lives, pointing out that the flooding claimed several lives in other parts of Ghana.
Lt. Gen. Agyapong attributed the absence of flooding within military barracks to strict environmental sanitation measures, including regular drain maintenance, protection of waterways, and adherence to proper estate planning regulations. He encouraged military personnel to adopt similar flood prevention practices in their own communities to reduce the impact of future flooding.
The Chief of the Defence Staff also revealed that the recent disaster has reinforced the Military High Command’s commitment to accelerating the redevelopment of Burma Camp and El-Wak Barracks, enabling more military personnel and civilian employees to live within secure military housing.
While acknowledging that the relief package could not fully replace the property lost, he said the assistance was intended to provide immediate support and help affected families recover from the disaster. He further announced that military hospitals have introduced psychosocial counselling services to assist personnel and their families in coping with the emotional effects of the floods.
Lt. Gen. Agyapong expressed appreciation to the Ministry of the Interior, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Service Chiefs, and officers who contributed relief items, military uniforms, equipment, and financial donations to support the affected personnel.
Each beneficiary received a comprehensive relief package containing blankets, mattresses, mosquito nets, buckets, wash basins, plastic plates and cups, bags of rice, cooking oil, and other essential household supplies. In addition, they were provided with replacement uniforms and financial assistance to support their recovery.
The June 29 heavy rains caused widespread flooding across Accra and several other parts of Ghana, destroying homes, damaging property, displacing families, and resulting in multiple fatalities.
In response to the disaster, the Ghana Armed Forces deployed personnel and equipment under Operation BOAFO to rescue stranded residents and support evacuation efforts, while NADMO coordinated emergency relief operations and humanitarian assistance for affected communities, reinforcing the government’s commitment to disaster management and public safety.
