Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has commended the Ghana Police Service for its response to the deadly violence that occurred in New Winneba, while urging residents and stakeholders to remain calm to prevent further attacks.
The violence reportedly resulted in the deaths of three people, while 17 others sustained injuries, including a police officer.
According to reports, a mob of about 300 people believed to have come from Gomoa Oguakrom, Gomoa Yenkuadze and Gomoa Pomadze stormed New Winneba armed with guns, stones, cutlasses and sticks.
Several shops, stores and residential properties were reportedly vandalised during the incident. The Effutu North District Police Headquarters was also damaged.
Afenyo-Markin praised the police for what he described as a prompt and professional response, as well as their continued efforts to restore calm and protect lives and property in the area.
The Minority Leader also expressed his condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and wished those injured a speedy recovery.
Afenyo-Markin Urges Dialogue Over New Winneba Land Dispute
Afenyo-Markin warned that escalating tensions could lead to additional loss of lives, injuries and destruction of property, urging all parties to avoid actions that could worsen the situation.
He stressed that historical and legal disagreements over New Winneba lands should not be used as justification for violence.
According to the Minority Leader, the way forward should be based on dialogue, respect for the law and peaceful engagement, regardless of competing historical claims or previous judicial decisions concerning the land.
He called on the communities involved to use established institutions, including the Lands Commission and the courts, as well as traditional channels, to address the land dispute.
Afenyo-Markin further appealed to both communities to respect one another and pursue a peaceful resolution to the longstanding disagreement.
Describing himself as a son of both communities, he said the situation required responsible leadership, restraint and careful engagement.
He added that the deaths and injuries recorded during the New Winneba violence should reinforce the need for all stakeholders to work together to prevent similar incidents and protect peace and security in the area.
