A Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) officer has died, while another sustained life-threatening injuries following a suspected dynamite explosion during a border patrol operation at Hamile in the Upper West Region.

The tragic incident occurred on Tuesday when a motor tricycle allegedly transporting explosive materials through an unauthorised route along the Ghana-Burkina Faso border exploded, killing the civilian occupants and one immigration officer.

According to security sources, the incident happened after the tricycle operators reportedly bypassed a security checkpoint and ignored instructions from immigration officers to stop for inspection.

The officers subsequently pursued the vehicle along the unauthorised border route in an attempt to prevent the suspected smugglers from entering Ghana.

However, the operation ended in tragedy when the suspected dynamite being transported on the tricycle detonated unexpectedly, triggering a powerful explosion that engulfed the vehicle and the pursuing officers.

One Ghana Immigration Service officer reportedly died instantly, while a second officer suffered serious injuries and is currently receiving intensive medical treatment.

The identities of the deceased persons and details of the medical facility treating the injured officer have not yet been officially disclosed by security authorities.

Explosion Raises Border Security Concerns in Upper West Region

The deadly explosion at Hamile has raised fresh concerns about border security, illegal smuggling and the transportation of dangerous explosive materials through unauthorised routes along Ghana’s northern frontier.

The incident also highlights the risks faced by Ghana Immigration Service personnel as they work to prevent cross-border crimes, illegal transportation of hazardous materials and other security threats.

The Ghana-Burkina Faso border remains an important security zone, requiring effective patrols and enforcement measures to prevent the movement of prohibited goods and dangerous substances.

The incident is expected to renew calls for stronger border surveillance, improved security equipment and enhanced protection for immigration officers operating in high-risk border communities.
