The Minority Caucus in Parliament has filed a fresh motion seeking a review of Speaker Alban Bagbin’s decision to reject its request for a parliamentary investigation into recent drug trafficking cases linked to Ghana.

The move follows the Speaker’s earlier decision to dismiss the Minority’s initial motion, citing significant similarities between the proposed parliamentary inquiry and issues currently being handled by the courts.

In his ruling, Speaker Bagbin explained that conducting a parliamentary investigation while related cases remain before the courts could interfere with evidence, witnesses and other matters relevant to ongoing judicial proceedings.

However, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin announced the latest development during a parliamentary leaders’ media briefing on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, ahead of the resumption of parliamentary sittings.

He disclosed that the caucus had formally submitted a fresh application challenging the Speaker’s decision under Standing Order 127 of Parliament’s Standing Orders.

According to Afenyo-Markin, the motion was filed through the First Deputy Minority Whip and Member of Parliament for Tolon, Habib Iddrisu.

The Minority Leader stressed that the latest action was intended to secure a review of the Speaker’s ruling and allow Parliament to exercise its constitutional oversight responsibilities.

He further clarified that the caucus was not seeking to undermine the authority of the Speaker or disrespect the Office of Parliament’s leadership.

However, he maintained that respect for the Speaker’s office should not prevent elected representatives from questioning decisions they believe could limit Parliament’s constitutional powers.

Afenyo-Markin argued that Parliament must retain its ability to demand accountability from public institutions, particularly on matters of national interest and public concern.

The fresh motion is therefore expected to reignite discussions about parliamentary oversight, constitutional authority and the relationship between legislative investigations and ongoing court proceedings in Ghana.

The controversy surrounding the proposed drug bust inquiry comes amid growing calls for transparency and accountability in the handling of drug trafficking cases involving Ghana.
