The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has arrested several suspected illegal miners following an enforcement operation at Subin Akwaaboso in the Central Region.
The operation, conducted on Sunday, November 1, 2026, involved NAIMOS personnel and members of the Special Boat Squadron (SBS), who reportedly encountered strong resistance from a group of individuals armed with cutlasses, firearms and other offensive weapons.
In a statement issued on Monday, November 2, NAIMOS disclosed that the confrontation created security risks for its officers and other individuals at the scene.
The operation was led by NAIMOS Director of Operations, Colonel K. S. Appiah, who reportedly exercised restraint and took steps to prevent the situation from escalating.
The Secretariat warned that individuals suspected of attacking security personnel or obstructing lawful anti-galamsey operations would be referred to the appropriate authorities for further action.
NAIMOS reaffirmed its commitment to conducting its operations within the law while taking necessary measures to protect its officers, journalists and members of the public.
The agency also appealed to traditional authorities, community leaders and residents to support the fight against illegal mining and raise concerns through appropriate channels.
With support from the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, security agencies and regulatory institutions, NAIMOS says it will intensify efforts to combat illegal mining, protect Ghana’s water bodies and forests, and safeguard the country’s natural resources.
