The Managing Director of Ghana Publishing Company Limited (GPCL), Nana Kwesi Boaitey, has revealed that he inherited a major overstaffing challenge when he assumed office in February 2025, with 250 employees performing duties that could be efficiently handled by 150 workers.
According to him, the situation placed significant pressure on the company’s finances and contributed to serious liquidity challenges.
Rather than resorting to staff layoffs, Mr Boaitey introduced a 24-hour shift system to improve workforce utilisation, increase production capacity and strengthen operational efficiency.
The new working arrangement distributes employees across three shifts: 7:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., and 10:00 p.m. to 4:30 a.m.
The initiative allows GPCL to maximise the use of its production equipment, extend operating hours and improve overall output without immediately reducing its workforce.
Mr Boaitey explained that the introduction of round-the-clock operations has transformed the company’s productivity culture while promoting workplace discipline, accountability and better staff management.
The 24-hour shift arrangement forms part of efforts to address operational inefficiencies, strengthen the company’s financial position and improve productivity at Ghana Publishing Company Limited.
The initiative also highlights how strategic workforce management and improved production planning can help state-owned enterprises reduce operational pressure and achieve better business performance.
