Electricity supply in the Ashanti Region is expected to improve significantly by December 2026 as the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) intensifies efforts to address persistent power outages in Kumasi and surrounding communities.

GRIDCo Chief Executive Officer, Ing. Frank Asirifi Otchere, disclosed that major electricity transmission upgrades are underway to strengthen power distribution and meet the growing demand from households and businesses.

As part of the intervention, GRIDCo is adding a fifth feeder to the existing four supplying the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG). The company is also upgrading the Kumasi–Anwomaso transmission line, including the Anwomaso–Ridge section, to increase its capacity from approximately 360 megawatts to 1,000 megawatts.

The transmission upgrade is expected to be completed in November 2026, with the broader infrastructure improvements targeted for completion by December.

According to Mr Otchere, the projects have been prioritised to improve electricity reliability, support industrial growth and reduce the frequent power interruptions affecting residents and businesses across Greater Kumasi.

The latest intervention follows earlier government assurances in December 2025 of improved electricity supply after additional generation capacity was linked to the AKSA Energy project at Anwomaso.

GRIDCo and ECG also announced a three-month transmission upgrade programme in July 2026 to increase the Kumasi–Anwomaso line’s capacity and address the region’s electricity supply challenges.

The upgrades are expected to strengthen Ghana’s power transmission network and provide more reliable electricity to homes, industries and commercial establishments in the Ashanti Region.
