Ten individuals, including four officers of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) Customs Division, are currently in custody as investigations continue into recent drug trafficking cases at Ghana’s ports.
President John Dramani Mahama was briefed on the development during a high-level security meeting held in Accra on Thursday, September 17, 2026.
Four Customs Officers Among 10 Persons in Custody
The Presidency has confirmed that four Customs officers are among the ten people being held as part of ongoing investigations into suspected drug trafficking activities in Ghana.
However, the identities of the individuals in custody have not been disclosed.
The Presidency also did not provide specific details about the allegations against those detained or confirm whether any charges have been filed.
The investigations are still ongoing, and the reported detention of the Customs officers does not by itself establish wrongdoing.
Ghana Ports Drug Trafficking Investigation
The security meeting reviewed recent developments involving drug trafficking at Ghanaian ports, as well as the security measures currently being used to detect and prevent the movement of illicit drugs through the country.
Officials assessed existing systems and structures designed to strengthen border security and combat drug trafficking.
The meeting also considered additional measures that could improve surveillance, controls and coordination among state agencies responsible for protecting Ghana’s borders and ports.
Mahama Orders Inter-Agency Task Force
Following the security briefing, President Mahama directed the establishment of an inter-agency task force to develop a comprehensive roadmap for preventing drug trafficking through Ghana’s borders.
The task force is expected to bring together relevant security and state institutions to assess existing challenges and propose additional measures to strengthen Ghana’s drug control and border security systems.
According to the Presidency, the task force has been given two weeks to submit its proposals.
The roadmap will be based on the conclusions and recommendations arising from the security meeting held on Thursday.
The latest development comes as authorities intensify efforts to strengthen drug trafficking prevention, port security, border controls and law enforcement coordination in Ghana.
