President John Dramani Mahama has called for stronger collaboration between traditional authorities and government to accelerate local development, improve governance and strengthen Ghana’s decentralisation system.
President Mahama made the call when he engaged members of the Ahafo Regional House of Chiefs at the Presidency, stressing the important role traditional leaders play in promoting development within their communities.
According to the President, chiefs are strategically positioned to contribute to community development and effective local governance and should have greater involvement in Ghana’s decentralisation process.
He noted that proposed reforms arising from the ongoing review of the 1992 Constitution could provide additional opportunities for traditional rulers to participate in the work of District Assemblies.
President Mahama also urged chiefs to strengthen collaboration with District Chief Executives (DCEs) to ensure that government resources allocated to districts result in visible infrastructure projects, improved public services and better living conditions for residents.
24-Hour Markets for Ghana’s 261 Districts
As part of measures to expand economic opportunities across the country, President Mahama announced plans to establish a 24-hour market in each of Ghana’s 261 districts.
The initiative is expected to create additional opportunities for farmers, traders and businesses to market their products while supporting local economic activity and the government’s broader 24-hour economy agenda.
The President also highlighted government’s efforts to accelerate development in Ghana’s six newly created regions, including the Ahafo Region.
He said several road projects in the region have been incorporated into the government’s Big Push infrastructure programme, aimed at improving road connectivity and supporting economic development.
President Mahama reaffirmed the government’s commitment to working closely with traditional authorities as strategic partners in promoting economic growth, district development, decentralisation and effective governance across Ghana.
