The Airport Divisional Police Command has arrested 52 motorcycle riders for their alleged involvement in illegal motorcycle racing along the George Walker Bush Highway near Villaggio in Accra.
The enforcement operation, carried out on Sunday, July 26, also resulted in the seizure of 71 motorcycles. The impounded vehicles include 25 registered Royal motorcycles, 26 unregistered Royal motorcycles, five power bikes, and 15 scooters.
In a statement signed by Chief Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Head of Public Affairs for the Accra Regional Police Command, preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects included riders from Accra as well as individuals believed to have travelled from Nsawam, Kasoa, Tema, Ashaiman, and Koforidua.
According to the Police, the group allegedly gathered at the location to participate in unlawful motorcycle racing and other activities that endangered public safety.
Authorities said the alleged racing disrupted the free flow of traffic and created significant risks for motorists, pedestrians, and other road users on the busy highway.
The suspects remain in police custody and are assisting with ongoing investigations. They are expected to be processed for court and may face charges including dangerous riding, careless and inconsiderate riding, unlawful motorcycle racing, failure to wear protective crash helmets, riding without a valid licence, operating unregistered motorcycles, failure to obtain compulsory motor insurance, and other road traffic offences.
The Accra Regional Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing road traffic laws, improving road safety, and protecting the public. The Police also encouraged residents to obey traffic regulations and report suspicious or unlawful activities to the nearest police station or through the official emergency contact numbers.
