The Ghana Police Service has arrested 36 suspects following the death of a police officer who was allegedly attacked and lynched by a mob at Gindabour in the Sawla District of the Savannah Region.
The development was disclosed in a police statement issued on September 17, 2026, outlining preliminary findings into the incident that occurred on September 16.
According to the police, General Constable Redeemer Owusu and other officers were conducting highway patrol duties along the Gindabour-Kenkyen community road when they noticed a motorbike rider approaching their location.
The rider reportedly diverted into the bush after seeing the police vehicle, raising suspicion among the officers. The patrol team subsequently approached the area from another direction and found the rider unconscious on a bush road.
The officers reportedly picked up the unconscious man and began transporting him to a hospital for medical attention. However, the rider died while being conveyed to the health facility.
Mob Attack Leaves Police Officer Dead
Following the news of the rider’s death, a mob from the community allegedly attacked the police officers.
The attack resulted in the death of General Constable Redeemer Owusu, while other members of the police team sustained various degrees of injuries.
The police vehicle used by the officers was also reportedly damaged during the incident.
The bodies of both the deceased police officer and the motorbike rider have since been conveyed to the Damongo Morgue, where they are expected to undergo preservation and autopsy.
Police Deploy Investigators to Gindabour
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) has deployed investigators and intelligence officers to support the ongoing investigation and help identify those responsible for the attack.
Additional police reinforcement teams from Damongo, Bole, Sawla, Tuna and Kalba, together with the Regional Intelligence Team, have also been deployed to the area.
The police said the deployment is intended to strengthen security, maintain law and order, and support efforts to bring those responsible to justice.
36 Suspects in Police Custody
The Ghana Police Service confirmed that all 36 suspects are currently in police custody and assisting with investigations.
The suspects are expected to be put before the court once investigations and the necessary legal processes are completed.
The police command has strongly condemned the attack on its officers and stated that it will ensure that anyone found responsible faces the full rigours of the law.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to establish the circumstances surrounding the death of the motorbike rider and the subsequent mob attack that claimed the life of the police officer.
