Haruna Iddrisu, Ghana’s Minister for Education, has warned that the country’s education system is experiencing a significant teacher shortage, with an estimated deficit of 50,000 to 90,000 instructors statewide.

Speaking to Parliament on Thursday, June 18, the Minister acknowledged the nation’s rising need for educators but pointed out that the government’s capacity to hire enough instructors to fill open positions is still hampered by financial difficulties.

Despite the critical need for more workers in schools, the education minister clarified that while attempts are being made to increase staffing numbers, budgetary constraints have slowed the pace of recruitment.

He added that since newly founded and growing institutions need more human resources, ongoing reforms in the education sector have raised the demand for skilled teachers.

The Minister states that organisations like the Commission for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (CTVET) and the Ghana Education Service (GES) now compete for available teaching staff, putting further strain on government resources and workforce planning.

He emphasised that while closing the teacher deficit is still a top objective, hiring choices must be weighed against the nation’s financial resources.
