The Coalition of Unemployed Graduates with Disabilities has called on President John Dramani Mahama to dismiss Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu and Ghana Education Service (GES) Director-General Professor Ernest Kofi Davis, accusing them of failing to implement the government’s mandatory 5% employment quota for persons with disabilities.
In a statement released on Monday, August 3, the coalition claimed that none of the 200 qualified graduates with disabilities it submitted for consideration was recruited during the recent GES recruitment exercise, despite the employment of approximately 7,000 new personnel.
According to the group, the alleged failure to enforce the statutory quota undermines the government’s commitment to equal employment opportunities, inclusive education, and disability rights in Ghana.
The coalition urged President Mahama to take immediate action by removing both the Education Minister and the GES Director-General from office for what it described as a disregard for presidential directives and non-compliance with the legally mandated recruitment quota for persons with disabilities (PWDs).
The group has also given the government a one-week ultimatum to recruit its qualified members into the Ghana Education Service. It warned that if no action is taken, its members will begin an indefinite peaceful occupation of Jubilee House, the Ministry of Finance, and the GES headquarters to press for their employment rights.
The coalition stressed that its demand is not for special treatment but for the enforcement of its constitutional and legal right to employment, stating that many qualified graduates with disabilities have remained unemployed for years despite meeting all recruitment requirements.
