The Ministry of Education has stated that Arabic, Chinese, and French have not been made compulsory subjects under Ghana’s proposed revised curriculum for basic schools.
In a statement released on Saturday, August 2, the ministry explained that the foreign languages will be offered only as optional subjects for students who choose to develop additional language skills.
According to the ministry, the availability of these language courses will depend on schools having qualified teachers, appropriate learning materials, and the necessary educational resources to support instruction.
The Ministry of Education also urged parents, teachers, and the general public to disregard false reports circulating on social media and other platforms claiming that foreign languages have become mandatory under the proposed basic education curriculum.
The ministry reaffirmed that the revised curriculum is designed to provide learners with flexible educational opportunities while allowing schools to offer optional language programmes where the required resources are available.
