At Christiansborg Castle in Osu, yesterday, President John Dramani Mahama joined heads of state and government, traditional leaders, African diaspora members, and foreign delegates for Africa and the United States’ historic combined Juneteenth celebration.

President Mahama recognised the tenacity, bravery, and enduring spirit of their descendants worldwide while paying tribute to the millions of Africans who suffered enslavement, displacement, and identity loss as a result of the transatlantic slave trade.

The commemoration, according to the President, came after the Next Steps High-Level Consultative Conference on Reparatory Justice concluded successfully, with participants adopting an outcome document to direct future international cooperation on reparatory justice, historical remembrance, and restitution.

President Mahama called for a more equitable and inclusive global order that offers opportunity, dignity, and fairness to everyone, emphasising that the quest of justice goes beyond compensation and the return of cultural items.

The President emphasised Ghana’s policies that encourage persons of African origin to re-establish connections with their ancestral homeland, such as avenues for residency and increased visa-free travel throughout the continent, while reiterating the country’s commitment to fortifying relations with the African diaspora.

President Mahama declared, “Ghana is your home. You are always welcome in the motherland.”

Mia Amor Mottley, the prime minister of Barbados, chiefs of state and government officials from throughout Africa and the Caribbean, traditional leaders, and members of the worldwide African diaspora were among the distinguished group of leaders gathered for the event.
