The Sagnarigu Municipal Security Council (MUSEC) has imposed an indefinite curfew on Damankunyili, Nyeshie, and surrounding communities in the Northern Region of Ghana following a deadly communal clash that claimed one life and left six others injured.
The decision comes after violent confrontations reportedly linked to a longstanding land dispute, with both the Damankunyili and Nyeshie communities claiming ownership of the same piece of land.
Land Dispute Sparks Violence
The conflict escalated into a violent clash, prompting the Sagnarigu Municipal Security Council to convene an emergency meeting on Tuesday to assess the security situation and implement measures to restore peace.
In an official statement signed by Municipal Chief Executive and MUSEC Chairman Abdulai Imoro Gong, the council strongly condemned the violence, expressed condolences to the family of the deceased, and wished the injured victims a speedy recovery.
Curfew Hours Announced
To prevent further unrest and strengthen security, MUSEC announced that a daily curfew will be enforced from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m., effective immediately and remaining in force until further notice.
Authorities have urged residents to fully comply with the directive as security agencies work to maintain peace in the affected communities.
Ban on Weapons and Increased Security
As part of the emergency security measures, the council has also banned the possession and carrying of firearms, ammunition, and other offensive weapons within Damankunyili, Nyeshie, and nearby communities.
Meanwhile, joint police patrols and security operations have been intensified across the area to enforce the curfew, prevent further clashes, and ensure law and order.
The Municipal Security Council has appealed to residents to remain calm, cooperate with law enforcement agencies, and resolve disputes through peaceful and lawful means as efforts continue to restore lasting peace in the municipality.
