The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) in the Ashanti Region has successfully managed a hazardous materials (Hazmat) emergency and responded to two separate road traffic accidents, helping to protect lives, property, and the environment.
Firefighters were dispatched to Konongo after a cargo truck carrying hydrogen peroxide developed a chemical leak that triggered a heavy smoke reaction. The emergency response team quickly brought the situation under control by cooling the affected container and diluting the leaking chemical, preventing the incident from escalating into a major disaster. Although part of the chemical shipment was damaged, no injuries or fatalities were reported.
In separate road crash incidents, GNFS rescue teams responded to emergencies at Akrofoase Mampong and Senfi, near the Police Barrier.
One accident involved a Ghana Police Service bus that reportedly veered off the road and landed in a ditch, leaving seven police officers injured. In another collision, a Kia Rhino truck crashed into a Howo petrol tanker, resulting in injuries to two individuals.
Emergency responders transported all injured victims to nearby hospitals for medical treatment. Authorities have launched investigations to determine the causes of both road accidents.
