In the early hours of Sunday, June 21, a building in Cape Coast collapsed due to severe rainfall that affected areas of the Central Regional capital, resulting in two deaths.

Adwoa Baduwa, 40, and Anastasia Abakah, 12, have been identified as the deceased, according to medical officials.

Four people were trapped under the debris of a single-room building that collapsed at Gyagyaano, behind Yoghurt Fie on Idan Fourth Alley, according to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), which stated it reacted quickly to the reports.

All four casualties were successfully pulled from the wreckage by rescue crews from the Cape Coast Metropolitan and Central Regional Fire Service headquarters.

The National Ambulance Service took the victims—three girls and one male—to the Ewim Polyclinic so they could receive medical attention.

Nevertheless, further examinations at the hospital verified Anastasia Abakah and Adwoa Baduwa’s deaths.

Preliminary findings, according to the Central Regional GNFS, indicate that the building collapsed as a result of its structural integrity being undermined by excessive rainfall.

Residents of old mud houses and buildings exhibiting structural instability have been advised by the Fire Service to seek professional evaluations and vacate any structures deemed unsafe, especially during the rainy season.
