The Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) project is anticipated to be finished by December 2027 as part of efforts to address the capital’s ongoing flooding, especially in the Odaw River Basin, according to Minister for Works, Housing, and Water Resources Kenneth Gilbert Adjei.
The minister states that the project, which started in February 2024, includes important interventions including solid waste management, drainage enhancement, and other flood mitigation techniques meant to promote climate resilience in flood-prone regions throughout Greater Accra.
Speaking in Parliament in response to enquiries about the project, Adjei stated that over $350 million has been set aside for its execution and reassured MPs that sufficient finance has been obtained to guarantee its successful conclusion.
He pointed out that a crucial part of the GARID project is the ongoing desilting and dredging of the Odaw River, which is anticipated to enhance water flow and lower the danger of floods during periods of high precipitation.
“The desilting and dredging contract for the Odaw River is being implemented as part of the GARID project. The project commenced in February 2024 and is scheduled to be completed by December 2027, with resources allocated under the GARID,” he said.
