Yaa-Naa Mahama Abukari II, the late Overlord of the Dagbon Kingdom, was celebrated by former President Akufo-Addo, who called him a “great figure of unity, strength, and enduring legacy.”

The tribute comes after the usual proclamation of the traditional ruler’s passing from Yendi’s Gbewaa Palace.

Akufo-Addo praised the late overlord’s crucial role in ending the protracted “Dagbon Crisis” during his tenure as Chief of Savelugu (Yoo Naa) in a statement posted on X.

His ascent to the Dagbon kingdom under Akufo-Addo’s presidency ultimately resulted from the conflict’s ultimate resolution.

“He and the two younger princes at the time, with mutual respect and affection, accepted my advice towards the implementation of the special solution to the special circumstances of the Dagbon Kingdom at the time,” Akufo-Addo stated.

The former president recalls the personal distinction of receiving the title “Naa Abudani” from the Yaa-Naa in 2020.

The title was awarded at Yendi during the first Damba Festival following the King’s enskinment, in recognition of Akufo-Addo’s contributions to the Dagbon reconciliation process.

According to Akufo-Addo, the late overlord’s rule was characterised by a revival of pride, unity, and cultural rebirth throughout the realm.

He called on Dagbon’s chiefs, kingmakers, and elders to ensure a peaceful and orderly transfer of power in order to uphold this legacy.

He went on to say, “It is reassuring to note that a regent has already been successfully enskinned,” urging Ghanaians to support the regent and the Dagbon community during this time of grief.

In closing, the former president and his wife, Rebecca Akufo-Addo, expressed their sincere sympathies to the Dagbon Kingdom’s chiefs, royal family, and populace.
