The news of His Royal Majesty, Yaa-Naa Mahama Abukari II, the 41st Overlord of the Dagbon Kingdom and President of the Northern Regional House of Chiefs, passing away on Saturday, July 11, 2026, was greeted by the Ghanaian Parliament with great sadness.
In this time of great national sorrow, Parliament offers the Gbewaa Palace, the Dagbon Traditional Council, the royal family, and the whole Dagbon community its sincere condolences on behalf of the Ghanaian people.
On January 18, 2019, Yaa-Naa Abukari II ascended the Yendi skin following a historic reconciliation process that put an end to years of conflict between the Andani and Abudu royal gates over the traditional leadership of the Dagbon.
One of Ghana’s most drawn-out and agonising chieftaincy conflicts was resolved by his enskinment, and Dagbon underwent a time that is generally recognised as one of healing, reconciliation, and the restoration of traditional authority.
The late King is regarded by Parliament as a true statesman whose leadership exemplified the timeless importance of communication, harmony, and reconciliation.
His dedication to peace enhanced Ghana’s chieftaincy institutions and national unity in addition to the Dagbon Kingdom.
Parliament joins the Palace in calling on the people of Dagbon to honour the late King’s heritage of peace and to be united during this time of mourning.
In the words of the Palace itself, “let there be no conflict in our grief, let there be no discord in our mourning.”
May the Almighty give the late Yaa-Naa’s family, the Chiefs and people of Dagbon, and everyone who is grieving him the strength to deal with this terrible loss.
May he rest in eternal peace.
